Things I should have blogged in 2008. Part 3

Autumn/Winter

  • Got a new camera - the Panasonic DMC-TZ5 - not a huge amount of control over individual settings - but the epic zoom and numerous scene modes make it possible to take some really fun pictures.
  • Interviewing and coding workshop at the Department of Architecture, Urbanism & Planning, KU Leuven, Belgium. My journey there was slightly hindered by being on the train behind the one that decided to be on fire in the channel tunnel. But I learned a lot - and enjoyed exploring the town.
  • Presented How do designers respond to changing social and cultural context in the styling of their products? at the Design and Emotion conference in Hong Kong. Highlights video here - fast forward to 5:05 for a familiar face.
  • Participated in the 48 Hour Inclusive Design Challenge in Hongo, Tokyo. An amazing opportunity for a group of us from Cambridge to work with design professionals from Japan and England. My team developed Crowdscape™ - an intelligent crowd management system that uses LED floor and wall tiles to guide people away from danger. We won the prize for "best technology" - but were beaten to the overall prize by Elixir - a water bottle that doubles as a toilet...
  • Visited the TOTO Universal Research Centre in Chigasaki, Tokyo - where they design the most functional toilets ever - and also other bathroom and kitchen products and interiors.
  • Explored Tokyo with friends and met up with Ayumu (Fujifilm designer from the previous trip) who showed us some really amazing sites that aren't in the guidebooks.
